MacGruber

MacGruber is a comedy about a former special operative brought out of retirement to stop his old enemy, Dieter Von Cunth, who has stolen a nuclear warhead and intends to use it against Washington. The mission becomes personal, since Cunth was responsible for the death of MacGruber's wife. Having withdrawn to a monastery in Ecuador, MacGruber returns to action, assembles a team that includes Lieutenant Dixon Piper and Vicki St. Elmo, and pursues Cunth through a series of confrontations. The character originated in comedy sketches and the film plays his incompetence and excessive confidence for laughs against the stakes of a nuclear threat.

The film was directed by Jorma Taccone, his first feature, from a screenplay he wrote with Will Forte and John Solomon. Forte leads the cast as MacGruber, with Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Powers Boothe and Maya Rudolph among the main roles. It was produced by John Goldwyn and Lorne Michaels for Universal Pictures and Relativity Media, among other companies, on a budget of about 10 million dollars. It is an action comedy running 90 minutes.

Released on May 21, 2010, it earned roughly 9 million dollars worldwide, less than its production budget. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6 out of 10 from around 50,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 637 votes. A critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 152 reviews places critical and audience responses close together. Taccone went on to direct Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping in 2016 and Over Your Dead Body in 2026.
