Death Note: Light Up the NEW World

Ten years after the confrontation between Kira and L, death notes once again reach the human world, and a new wave of killings spreads panic across the globe. A special task force, including the veteran investigator Matsuda from the original Kira case, is assigned to the deaths, while the world-famous detective Ryuzaki, L's designated successor, pursues his own inquiry. Their investigations point to six death notes circulating at once, each with its own holder and agenda, and to a computer virus that calls for the notebooks to be surrendered. The task force and Ryuzaki find themselves caught between those seeking Kira's return and those trying to prevent it.

Shinsuke Sato directed this 2016 Japanese production, which followed I Am a Hero in his filmography and preceded Bleach and Inuyashiki. Masahiro Higashide plays Tsukuru Mishima, with Sosuke Ikematsu as Ryuzaki, Masaki Suda as Yuki Shien, Erika Toda as Misa Amane, Mina Fujii as Sho Nanase and Rina Kawaei as Sakura Aoi. The screenplay is by Katsunari Mano, with Tadashi Tanaka producing.

Released in October 2016, the film took about 19 million dollars worldwide. Viewers rate it 5.7 out of 10 on IMDb and 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from a small number of reviews is broadly in line with those audience scores, indicating a mixed but not hostile reception.
