Short description
Life is a science fiction thriller set aboard the International Space Station, where a six-person crew examines samples brought back from Mars. The researchers find evidence of a living organism, the first known proof of life beyond Earth. As they study it, the organism turns out to be far more intelligent than they anticipated, and their work produces consequences that extend well beyond the station. The screenplay is by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and the cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal as David Jordan, Rebecca Ferguson as Miranda North, Ryan Reynolds as Rory Adams, Hiroyuki Sanada as Sho Murakami, Olga Dihovichnaya as Ekaterina Golovkina and Ariyon Bakare as Hugh Derry.
The film was directed by Daniel Espinosa and released in 2017. It followed Safe House and Child 44 in his filmography, before Morbius and Madame Luna. Made for a budget of 58 million dollars, it earned 101 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 from around 276,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from roughly 8,000 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6 out of 10 from 261 reviews, placing critical and audience responses close together. What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Rebecca Ferguson refused to play Dr. Miranda North, fearing she wouldn't be able to handle filming on such a project, but director Daniel Espinosa convinced her otherwise.
- Initially, Ryan Reynolds was planned to play the main character, but his filming schedule for Patrick Hughes' action film "The Hitman's Bodyguard" (2017) prevented it, so Reynolds took on a supporting role.
- At the 83rd minute of the film, it is visible that Miranda North's name is written as M. Sever in Russian on her spacesuit. While this is a correct translation, the surnames of real people should be written in transliteration.
- The scenes in which Olga Dakhovichna's character's spacesuit fills with water were inspired by a real incident on the ISS during Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano's spacewalk on July 16, 2013. The leak was not as severe as shown in the film, but water did enter his helmet, causing vision and breathing difficulties and temporarily cutting off communication.
