Short description
Lily, a young nurse, moves into an old Massachusetts house to care for Iris Blum, a reclusive writer of horror stories whose health and memory are failing. The arrangement is made by Mr. Waxcap, who manages the property and wants Iris kept in the home where she intends to remain. Iris persists in calling Lily by another name, and as Lily reads the writer's work, the quiet house and its long history begin to press in on her.
The film is a drama, horror and mystery from Canada and the United States, written and directed by Oz Perkins as his first feature. Ruth Wilson plays Lily, with Paula Prentiss as Iris Blum, Bob Balaban as Mr. Waxcap and Lucy Boynton as Polly Parsons. It runs 89 minutes.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.6 from around 18,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 4.6, from 638 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 from 22 reviews sits noticeably higher than those audience scores. Perkins followed this debut with The Blackcoat's Daughter, Gretel & Hansel, Longlegs, Keeper, The Monkey and a further film set for 2028.

- In one of the scenes at the beginning of the film, Iris’s bookshelf, played by Paula Prentiss, is shown, and the book furthest to the right on it is “The Lady in the Wall.” Lily, the main character played by Ruth Wilson, repeatedly mentions this book throughout the film. It was written by Paula Prentiss’s character and is set in the early 19th century. It tells the story of Polly, a young bride who suffered some terrible fate. The very first line spoken in the film is almost identical to the first line of the book, indicating a connection between Polly and Lily. Throughout the film, Iris calls Lily by the name Polly.
