In a future where settlers have colonized a distant planet called New World, the thoughts of men are visible and audible to everyone around them, an unending phenomenon known as the Noise. Todd Hewitt, raised in the all-male settlement of Prentisstown, has grown up hearing the minds of every man he passes. His life changes when a scout ship from a later wave of colonists crashes nearby and he meets Viola, the first woman he has ever encountered. When the town's mayor, David Prentiss, sets out to use her for his own purposes, Viola flees, and Todd becomes her only ally. The two set off across the planet's badlands while the mayor and his men pursue them.
Doug Liman directed the film, the tenth of fourteen features he has made, following The Wall and preceding Locked Down. Tom Holland plays Todd and Daisy Ridley plays Viola, with Mads Mikkelsen as Mayor Prentiss, Demián Bichir as Ben Moore, David Oyelowo as Aaron and Kurt Sutter as Cillian Boyd. Christopher Ford and Patrick Ness wrote the screenplay, based on Ness's novel.
Made for about 125 million dollars, the film returned roughly 27 million dollars worldwide, a substantial shortfall. Audiences were divided: it holds a 5.7 rating on IMDb from over fifty-four thousand votes and a 6.5 on TMDB from more than two thousand. A critics' score of 4.5 from 154 reviews sits below both audience figures.
