Short description
Paranormal Activity 2 is a 2010 American horror and mystery film directed by Tod Williams. Daniel and Kristi Rey have just brought a newborn home when strange events begin inside their house. Believing they are being burgled, the couple installs surveillance cameras throughout the property, only to find that what the footage captures is something far more sinister than a break-in. Kristi's sister Katie and her boyfriend Micah are also part of the household's orbit, tying the story to the events of the first film.
The film was released in October 2010, following Williams's 2004 debut The Door in the Floor and preceding Cell (2016). The screenplay is credited to Christopher Landon, Tom Pabst and Michael R. Perry, with Jason Blum and Oren Peli producing for Paramount, Blumhouse Productions, Solana Films and Room 101. Sprague Grayden and Brian Boland lead the cast as Kristi and Daniel, alongside Molly Ephraim, Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat and Seth Ginsberg. Made for a budget of about 3 million USD, it went on to take roughly 178 million USD worldwide, a large return for a modestly priced production.
Audience scores sit at 5.7/10 on IMDb from around 115,000 votes and 5.8/10 on TMDB, while a critics' rating comes in at 6.1/10 from 138 reviews, close to the viewer averages. The film runs 91 minutes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The reactions of the actors in most of the frightening scenes (such as the scene with the wardrobe and Christie, played by Sprague Grayden) were genuine. The actress was warned that the wardrobe door would open, but she did not expect all the doors to open at once, so her fright was not at all feigned.
- The film's trailer featured a lot of footage that didn't make it into the final cut. This infuriated many fans of the film, but director Tod "Kip" Williams explained this marketing move was dictated by the needs of the plot.
- Initially, Kevin Greutert was chosen as the director, but he was forced to work on the horror film "Saw 3D" (2010) at the insistence of his producers (Troy Begnaud, Peter Block, Mark Burg, Jason Constantine, Daniel J. Heffner, Gregg Hoffman, Kailey Cavana, Oren Koules, Stacey Testro, James Wan, and Leigh Whannell). The producers cited a specific clause in his contract, and Greutert had to abandon work on "Paranormal Activity 2".
- The film was delivered to cinemas under the code name "Sharpie 79".
