Emma is a doctor with little time or appetite for a serious relationship, and Adam works as an assistant on a television series. The two have known each other for years, and after one night together they decide to keep having sex while deliberately avoiding any commitment. Their arrangement comes with rules meant to keep feelings out of it, but the balance proves difficult to maintain, especially once one of them wants more than the other is prepared to give.

No Strings Attached was released in 2011 and directed by Ivan Reitman, the fourteenth of the fifteen films he directed in chronological order, following My Super Ex-Girlfriend and preceding Draft Day. Elizabeth Meriwether wrote the screenplay, and Reitman produced with Joe Medjuck and Jeffrey Clifford. Natalie Portman plays Emma and Ashton Kutcher plays Adam, with Kevin Kline, Cary Elwes, Greta Gerwig and Lake Bell among the supporting cast. The production involved 60 credited cast members and 91 credited crew members.

Made for about 25 million dollars, the film took in roughly 149 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from about 255,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.3 out of 10 from a much smaller base of around 5,000 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3 out of 10 from 171 reviews places it below both audience scores.
