Adrift follows Tami Oldham, a young woman who travels to Tahiti looking for adventure and instead meets Richard Sharp, a sailor with whom she quickly falls in love. The two set out together across the Pacific Ocean, only for their voyage to be interrupted by one of the most destructive hurricanes on record. When Tami regains consciousness after the storm, she finds Richard seriously injured and their boat wrecked. Stranded far from land, with no prospect of rescue, she must draw on her own resourcefulness to keep them both alive.
The film is directed by Baltasar Kormákur and written by David Branson Smith and the brothers Aaron and Jordan Kandell, with Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin in the leading roles. Woodley also produced alongside Kormákur and Aaron Kandell. It is based on a true story, and Tami Ashcraft, the real survivor, appears as herself.
Adrift was released in 2018, arriving between The Oath and Beast in Kormákur's filmography. Made for around 35 million dollars, it took in roughly 60 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.6 from about 66,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from a much smaller number of voters; a critics' rating of 6.1 from 203 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
