Hellphone
Short description
Hellphone is a French comedy-fantasy film about Sid, a teenage skateboarder living on the outskirts of Paris who longs for a mobile phone. A new student, Angie, has just arrived from New York, and Sid sees a phone as his way to get her attention, even though she is currently with Virgile, the school's playboy. When Sid picks up a suspiciously cheap phone from a strange shop, it turns out to have powers of its own: it grants his wishes, but it also seems willing to go to disturbing lengths for its owner, and Sid gradually loses control of what is happening around him.
James Huth directed and wrote the film, and also produced it with Eric and Nicolas Altmayer. It followed Huth's 2005 comedy The Brice Man and came before Lucky Luke (2009), Happiness Never Comes Alone (2012), Meet the Malawas (2019), The New Toy (2022) and Wanted Santa (2025). Jean-Baptiste Maunier plays Sid, with Jennifer Decker as Angie, Benjamin Jungers as his childhood friend Pierre, Vladimir Consigny as Virgile, and Édouard Collin and Baptiste Caillaud among the credited cast of 31.
The film runs 98 minutes and mixes comedy and horror with fantasy and mystery. On TMDB it holds a rating of 4.6 out of 10 from 124 votes, which indicates a muted response from that audience.
What's left behind the scenes
- The mobile phone – the main character – was purchased before filming on the popular Russian portal Digital eXtern, and then resold at a California Film Academy auction for $30,000. The reason for the purchase from a Russian online resource is unknown.
- In one scene in the cinema, you can see a film by one of the screenwriters, Jean-Baptiste Andrea, called "Dead End".
- During the chase, Angie asks Sid if he sang in the church choir, to which he replies that he has no voice. In fact, the actor who played Sid, Jean-Baptiste Monie, was a soloist in the Saint-Marc Boys' Choir in Lyon and performed one of the roles in the film "The Chorus".
