Battleship

Battleship is a science fiction action film about a naval exercise in the Pacific that turns into a fight for survival. After scientists send a signal toward a distant planet believed capable of supporting life, a response arrives: several alien vessels come down in the waters near Hawaii. An international fleet taking part in maneuvers around the islands is left to confront the intruders, and the crew of the destroyer USS John Paul Jones becomes central to the defense. Among them is Lieutenant Alex Hopper, a weapons officer whose personal struggles and strained relationship with his commanding admiral shape his role in the crisis. The story moves across sea, air and land as the human force tries to stop the aliens from establishing a foothold.

Peter Berg directed the film, the sixth of thirteen he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Hancock in 2008 and Lone Survivor in 2013. The screenplay is by Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber, and the large cast of 182 credited performers is led by Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker, Tadanobu Asano and Hamish Linklater. The production, made across Hong Kong, the United States and Japan, carried a budget of 209 million dollars and returned 303 million dollars worldwide. Audience response was modest: it holds 5.8/10 on IMDb from 269,000 votes and 5.9/10 on TMDB from 6,180 votes. A film critics' rating of 4.7/10 from 223 reviews places critical opinion somewhat below the audience scores.
