Two Much

Art Dodge runs a failing Miami art gallery and stays afloat partly through dishonest sales. After crossing a mobster, Gene Paletto, he hides out with Gene's ex-wife, Betty, who is drawn to him, and a wedding soon follows. The trouble is that Art falls for Betty's sister, Liz, and cannot choose between them. Since the two sisters share a house, he invents a twin brother and performs both roles to keep each woman satisfied, while Gene's interest in Betty's welfare keeps the pressure on.

Fernando Trueba directed, working from a screenplay he wrote with David Trueba. It came after Belle Époque and was followed, over the years, by Chico & Rita, The Queen of Spain, They Shot the Piano Player, Haunted Heart and Bajañí. Antonio Banderas plays Art, with Melanie Griffith as Betty, Daryl Hannah as Liz, Danny Aiello as Gene, Joan Cusack as Gloria and Eli Wallach as Sheldon. Thirty-one performers are credited.

The film was a Spanish and American co-production, made for a reported 24 million dollars and released in December 1995. Its worldwide gross of about 1 million dollars was a small fraction of that budget. On TMDB it holds 5.5 out of 10 from 179 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 3.6 out of 10 from seven reviews, a lower figure than the audience score.
