New Kids Turbo
Short description
Five friends in the small Dutch town of Maaskantje lose their jobs in an economic downturn, and their request for unemployment benefits is turned down. Rather than tighten their belts, Richard, Robbie, Rikkert, Barrie and Gerrie decide they will simply stop paying for anything, taking what they want. Their refusal to pay quickly draws attention: a television crew begins following them, their example spreads to others, and the government responds with increasingly harsh measures. The film is an action comedy built around the group's taste for tuned cars, beer and 1990s style.
New Kids Turbo is the 2010 feature debut of directors Flip van der Kuil and Steffen Haars, who also wrote the screenplay and appear in the cast alongside Tim Haars, Huub Smit and Wesley van Gaalen. Hans de Weers and Reinout Oerlemans produced. Each director has since made two further features, Krazy House and a second film; van der Kuil made Carnaval, Haars made Get Away.
Made for about 2 million USD, the film took roughly 18 million USD worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 19,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.4 from a few hundred votes, so the two audience measures agree closely.
What's left behind the scenes
- Anthony Kamerling, a famous actor in the Netherlands, was a fan of the series that formed the basis of this film. He volunteered to star in the film, but took his own life before its release. At the request of his family, the only scene featuring him, which had been filmed, was included in the film.
- DJ Paul Elstak asked to be in the film and requested permission to write a song for it, as he was an idol of the main characters. He even regrew his famous mustache, which he wore in the 1990s.
