Satan's Slaves

In 1981 Indonesia, Rini and her three younger brothers watch their mother Mawarni waste away from a mysterious illness that has dragged on for years. Her medical care and her fading career as a singer have drained the family's savings, and their father Bahri struggles to keep them afloat. After Mawarni dies, Bahri leaves the children in their grandmother's care while he travels to arrange the sale of the house. Soon the children begin to see and hear a presence in the home that resembles their late mother, and Rini uncovers troubling details about her parents' past. The film is a remake of the 1982 Indonesian horror title of the same name, which was itself a reworking of Don Coscarelli's Phantasma.

Joko Anwar wrote and directed this entry in his filmography, which followed The Forbidden Door and preceded Gundala and Impetigore. Tara Basro leads as Rini, with Bront Palarae as Bahri, Ayu Laksmi as Mawarni, and Endy Arfian, Nasar Anuz and M. Adhiyat as her brothers. A crew of around sixty was credited, and the film took roughly nine million dollars worldwide.

On IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from about 13,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7/10 from a few hundred votes. A critics' rating of 6.8/10 from 23 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a broadly comparable reception on both sides.
