Kaboom

Smith is a college freshman more interested in parties and casual encounters than in settling on anything, including his sexuality. He spends his time with his sharp-tongued friend Stella, is drawn to the rebellious London, and is attracted to his roommate Thor, a good-looking surfer. After taking hallucinogens at a party one night, Smith becomes convinced he has witnessed the murder of a red-haired woman who had until then appeared only in his dreams. From there the film moves through strange dreams, conspiracies, masked pursuers and killings that may or may not be real, blurring the line between hallucination and an actual plot against him.

Gregg Araki wrote and directed this 2010 comedy, drama, mystery and science fiction hybrid, and produced it with Pascal Caucheteux and Andrea Sperling. It is his sixth feature, arriving after The Living End, The Doom Generation, Nowhere, Mysterious Skin and Smiley Face, and before White Bird in a Blizzard and I Want Your Sex. Thomas Dekker plays Smith, with Haley Bennett, Chris Zylka, Roxane Mesquida, Juno Temple and James Duval in supporting roles. The production was split between the United States and France.

On IMDb, the film's critics' rating stands at 5.8 out of 10 from 105 reviews, close to the 5.6 out of 10 audience score on TMDB from 369 votes. Both figures suggest a modestly received title, with critics and viewers roughly agreeing on its merits.
