Drive Angry
Short description
Milton, a hardened criminal, escapes from Hell to hunt down the cult members who murdered his daughter and abducted her baby. A waitress named Piper, who has her own reasons for wanting a fresh start, joins him in a speeding car as he races to reach the cult before the child is sacrificed. The cult leader, Jonah King, is the target of his pursuit, while a sinister figure known as the Accountant is hunting Milton in turn, looking to drag him back to the underworld.
Patrick Lussier directed and co-wrote the film with Todd Farmer. It was Lussier's seventh feature, following My Bloody Valentine, and it sits between that 2009 release and Flesh & Blood. Nicolas Cage leads as Milton, with Amber Heard as Piper, William Fichtner as the Accountant, Billy Burke as Jonah King, David Morse and Charlotte Ross. The production involved Michael De Luca Productions, Nu Image, Millennium Media and Cage's Saturn Films.
The film had a budget of around 50 million dollars and took in roughly 41 million worldwide, so ticket sales did not recover its cost. Critical and audience responses were similarly muted, with the critics' rating close to the marks on IMDb and TMDB, where the film holds modest averages across a large volume of votes. The result is a genre mixture of action, crime, fantasy and thriller that found a limited following rather than broad success.
What's left behind the scenes
- William Fichtner's character in the film uses an obol – an ancient Greek coin once placed in the hand of the deceased to pay Charon for ferrying the soul across the River Styx. Fichtner's character hunts lost souls.
- The initial script stipulated that Milton was around 70 years old, so producers began searching for an actor in that age range. However, Nicolas Cage expressed interest in the project, and the protagonist's age became less important, ultimately leading to Cage being cast in the role.
- According to Nicolas Cage, one of the reasons he agreed to star in this film was a scene where his character is blinded. Something similar happened to Cage's character in Dominic Sena's action-adventure film "Season of the Witch" (2010), but that scene was cut because the film was intended for a PG-13 rating (children under 13 are not advised to watch). This film, however, was made with an R rating in mind (persons under 17 are only admitted when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian).
- The shotgun shell is inscribed with "Deus velox nex," which translates from Latin to "God of swift death."
- The license plate of the Dodge Charger encodes the title of the film "DRiVe AnGRY".
