Destiny: The Tale of Kamakura takes place in an alternate version of the ancient Japanese city, where humans share their daily lives with spirits, shapeshifters and other fantastical beings. Akiko, a cheerful publishing assistant, moves there after marrying Masakazu Isshiki, a popular mystery writer who is much older than she is. She is startled by the town's oddities but gradually settles into her new life. Before she can fully adjust, a minor incident sends her spirit to the underworld ahead of its time. Convinced that fate has other plans for his wife, Masakazu travels into the underworld to bring her back.
Takashi Yamazaki directed and wrote the screenplay, the ninth of the eighteen films he has directed in chronological order, following Parasyte: Part 2 and preceding Dragon Quest: Your Story. The cast includes Masato Sakai as Masakazu, Mitsuki Takahata as Akiko, Shinichi Tsutsumi, Sakura Ando, Min Tanaka and Tamao Nakamura, with twenty credited cast members and forty-five credited crew.
Released in Japan in December 2017, the film runs 129 minutes and blends drama, fantasy and mystery. It earned about 32 million dollars worldwide, a solid result for a Japanese production of this kind. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 1,500 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.5 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 38 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from five reviews places it close to the broader audience score.
