Be Kind Rewind

Jerry, a junkyard worker, becomes convinced that a nearby power plant is affecting his mind and attempts to sabotage it. The scheme backfires: he ends up magnetized, and when he visits his friend Mike at the rundown video store where Mike works, he wipes every tape in the shop. To keep the store's most loyal customer, an elderly woman, from noticing that her requested film is gone, the two men grab a camera and remake it themselves. Word spreads around town, and other customers begin asking for their own homemade versions of familiar titles, giving the struggling shop an unexpected purpose.

Michel Gondry directed and wrote the film, which followed The Science of Sleep in his filmography and was his fourth feature. Jack Black plays Jerry and Yasiin Bey plays Mike, with Danny Glover as the store's owner, Mia Farrow as the customer, and Melonie Diaz and Irv Gooch in supporting roles. The production, a French-American collaboration, cost about 20 million dollars and took in roughly 31 million worldwide.

Audience response has been moderate: the film holds a 6.4 on IMDb from around 96,000 votes and a 6.3 on TMDB from a much smaller pool. A critics' score of 6.5 from 125 reviews places professional opinion slightly above the audience averages.
