Danny Maccabee, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, has long used a wedding ring and invented stories of an unhappy marriage to avoid commitment. When he meets Palmer, a much younger woman he wants a real relationship with, the lie becomes a problem: Palmer learns of the supposed wife and insists on meeting her. Danny turns to Katherine Murphy, his loyal office assistant and a single mother, asking her to pose as his estranged wife. The deception grows as Katherine's children are drawn in, and the group travels to Hawaii for a weekend that forces everyone to confront the situation they have created.
Dennis Dugan directed the film, the eleventh of the fourteen features he directed and the one between Grown Ups and Jack and Jill. Allan Loeb and Timothy Dowling wrote the screenplay, with Adam Sandler, Jack Giarraputo and Heather Parry producing. Sandler plays Danny, Jennifer Aniston plays Katherine, Brooklyn Decker plays Palmer, and Nicole Kidman, Nick Swardson and Bailee Madison also appear among a credited cast of sixty-one, supported by a credited crew of seventy-seven.
Released in February 2011, the comedy runs 117 minutes. Made for about 80 million dollars, it took in roughly 215 million dollars worldwide, a solid return. Audiences are moderately positive: it holds 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb from 288,000 votes and 6.7 out of 10 on TMDB from 6,246 votes. A critics' rating of 3.9 out of 10 from 136 reviews is markedly lower than those audience scores.
