Leaving Afghanistan
Short description
Based on real events, this war drama is set between 1988 and 1989 during the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan. The plot centers on the 108th motorized infantry division, whose return home is delayed when a pilot and the son of General Vasiliev is captured by mujahideen fighters following a plane crash. The soldiers must undertake one final mission to rescue the pilot and navigate the dangers of the Salang pass.
The film was directed by Pavel Lungin, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Alexandr Lungin and served as a producer alongside Evgeniy Panfilov. In the chronological order of his work, this production follows Tycoon and White Lilacs and precedes Четыре жизни Петра Мамонова. The cast features Kirill Pirogov as Dmitrich, Yan Tsapnik as Abdusalamov, Vitaly Kishchenko as General Vasilyev, and Anton Momot as Greek.
Produced in Russia by Cinema Fund, Germes Film, and Pavel Lungin Studios, the movie had a budget of 4 million USD. Audience reception is moderate, with a rating of 6.1/10 on IMDb based on 1,400 votes and a score of 6.6/10 on TMDB from 96 votes.

- The car the general is riding in is a Volga 3102, with a new dashboard that was produced starting in 1998. That is, 10 years after the events of the story.
- In the film, the soldiers buy a Panasonic RX CT-840 stereo. The model name is clearly visible later, at the 23rd minute, when they are riding in an APC and turn on a cassette. This stereo began production in 1992, while the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan began in 1988 and ended in 1989.
