Terri is a teenager living in a small American town, overweight and withdrawn, who has been left in the care of his uncle James. He attends high school in his pajamas and has largely accepted his position as an outsider. His situation changes when Mr. Fitzgerald, the school's assistant principal, takes an interest in him. Fitzgerald runs regular sessions meant to help students who do not fit in, and through him Terri forms an unexpected, imperfect connection with two other students on the margins: Chad, an anxious loner, and Heather, a girl whose precocious sexuality has made her an object of attention she did not choose. The film follows this tentative and difficult engagement with the world around him.
Azazel Jacobs directed from a screenplay by Patrick DeWitt. It was Jacobs's second feature, arriving before The Lovers, French Exit and His Three Daughters. Jacob Wysocki plays Terri, with John C. Reilly as Mr. Fitzgerald, Creed Bratton as Uncle James, Olivia Crocicchia as Heather, Bridger Zadina as Chad and Mary Anne McGarry as Ms Hamish. The credited cast numbers 21.
On IMDb the film holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 11,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from 162 votes, indicating a modest but settled audience response. The critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 96 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
