Mary Lennox is a British girl raised in India by parents who paid her little attention. When they die, she is sent to England to live at Misselthwaite Manor, the vast Yorkshire estate of her uncle, Lord Archibald Craven, a man still consumed by grief. Left largely to herself by the housekeeper, Mrs. Medlock, Mary explores the house and grounds, where she discovers a walled garden that has been locked and left untended for years. With a local boy and her ill cousin Colin, she begins to bring the garden back to life, and the change it works on the children is greater than any of them expected.
The film is directed by Marc Munden, whose two credited features are this one and Help, released the following year, from a screenplay by Jack Thorne. Dixie Egerickx plays Mary, with Colin Firth as her uncle and Julie Walters as Mrs. Medlock, alongside Edan Hayhurst as Colin Craven. It is a British and French production from Heyday Films and StudioCanal, running 100 minutes.
Released in July 2020, the film took about 9 million dollars worldwide. Reception was modest: film critics' reviews average 6.1 out of 10, while audiences on IMDb rate it 5.6 from roughly 11,000 votes and on TMDB 6.3 from a much smaller pool of 622.
