Mathayus, the warrior known as the Scorpion King, faces a new threat in ancient Egypt. A ruthless warlord, Nebserek, has found a cursed sword that lets him drain the strength of everyone it kills, making him more powerful with each death. To stop him, Mathayus joins forces with the Nubian princess Tala, the sorceress Amina and Amina's guardian, a golem. The group sets out to find the Book of Souls, a legendary relic that offers the only way to defeat Nebserek.
Don Michael Paul directed the film, the twelfth of the fifteen features he has made, between Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell and Jarhead: Law of Return. David Alton Hedges wrote the screenplay, and Mike Elliott produced. Zach McGowan plays Mathayus, with Peter Mensah as Nebserek, Pearl Thusi as Tala, Mayling Ng as Khensa, Katy Louise Saunders as Amina and Inge Beckmann as Mennofer. The film belongs to the Scorpion King series and was released in 2018 by Universal 1440 Entertainment.
Audience response has been modest. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 4.6 from roughly 3,900 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 from a much smaller group of around 320 voters. The two averages point to a film watched more widely than it was admired, with the higher figure resting on far fewer opinions.
