Black Water: Abyss

A group of friends heads into a remote, unmapped cave system in the forests of northern Australia, hoping for an adventurous outing. When a tropical storm closes in and the caves begin to flood, the group becomes trapped underground, with water rising and air running short. What they do not realise is that the storm has also driven hungry crocodiles into the caves with them.

Andrew Traucki directed the film, working from a screenplay by Sarah Smith and John Ridley. It sits between his earlier Black Water and The Reef and his later The Reef: Stalked, and it returns him to the flooded-cave survival territory of his 2008 crocodile film. Jessica McNamee and Luke Mitchell play Jennifer and Eric, the couple who persuade their friends to make the trip, with Amali Golden, Benjamin Hoetjes, Anthony J. Sharpe and Louis Toshio Okada rounding out the group.

Released in July 2020, the film runs 98 minutes and was produced across Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Its worldwide box office came to about 1 million USD, a modest return for a creature feature of this scale. On IMDb it holds 4.6/10 from around 7,700 votes, a figure in line with the critics' rating of 4.6/10 from 37 reviews, while on TMDB its audience score is slightly higher at 5.2/10 from 488 votes.
