Short description

The Animatrix is a collection of nine short films that explore the universe of the Matrix. Blending computer graphics with Japanese anime, the stories detail the origins of the synthetic world and the global war between humanity and machines. The anthology includes various segments such as The Second Renaissance, Final Flight of the Osiris, and A Detective Story.

The project was conceived by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, who also served as producers and screenwriters. It was directed by a group of filmmakers including Koji Morimoto, Peter Chung, Andrew R. Jones, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Takeshi Koike, Mahiro Maeda, and Shinichiro Watanabe. For Morimoto, this 2003 release followed his 1995 film Memories. For Kawajiri, it followed several works including the 2001 film Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. The voice cast features Keanu Reeves as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity.

Produced in the United States, Japan, and Korea, the film had a budget of 5 million USD and earned 68 million USD worldwide. It is generally well-received by audiences, holding a 7.3 rating on IMDb from 91,000 votes and a 7.2 rating on TMDB from 1,850 votes. These audience scores are higher than the 6.7 rating provided by film critics.

What's left behind the scenes

  • At the end of the episode “The Story of One Child,” the inscription on the tombstone reads: “Michael Karl Popper. To a beloved son. Rest in peace.” Karl Popper (1902-1994) was an Austrian and British philosopher and sociologist, one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century.
