Charlie has spent two years in a psychiatric institution in California, and when he is released he moves back in with Miranda, the teenage daughter he left behind. Miranda has been supporting herself with a job at a fast-food restaurant. Charlie arrives with an obsession: he is convinced that a fortune in Spanish gold coins lies buried beneath the local wholesale store, and he sets about persuading his skeptical daughter to help him get at it. She takes a job at the store so the pair can obtain a key, and the two begin working toward a scheme that most people around them consider delusional.

Michael Douglas plays Charlie and Evan Rachel Wood plays Miranda, with Willis Burks II, Kathleen Wilhoite and Anne L. Nathan among the supporting cast. Mike Cahill directed and wrote the screenplay, and Alexander Payne, Avi Lerner and Randall Emmett produced. The film was made for about 10 million dollars and took in roughly 1 million dollars worldwide.
