Bio Hunter

A virus that alters human genetic material is loose in Tokyo, turning those it infects into monsters with demonic abilities. Two molecular biologists, Komada and Koshigaya, hunt the virus on their own time and are working toward a cure. Komada carries the infection himself but has so far been able to keep his transformation under control, while Koshigaya is close to completing a vaccine. Their investigation connects the virus to a killer stalking the city, and to a psychic who may hold the secret of what the outbreak really is.

The 1995 animated feature runs just under an hour and was directed by Yuzo Sato, working from a screenplay by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. Kawajiri also directed the film as part of a long run of dark action animation that began with Lensman in 1984 and continued through titles such as Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, Ninja Scroll and, later, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. It was produced by Madhouse with Goodhill Vision, Filmlink International and BMG Japan.

Toshihiko Seki voices Komada, with Kazuhiko Inoue as Koshigaya, Yuko Minaguchi as Sayaka and Tarō Ishida as Tabe. The film holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 1,500 votes, and 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes, placing it in modest territory among anime releases of its period.
