The Jane Austen Book Club

In a small California town, five women and one man form a book club devoted to Jane Austen's six novels, meeting once a month over six months. The members include Bernadette, a woman several times divorced; Prudie, a French teacher; Sylvia, whose long marriage has recently ended; Sylvia's daughter Allegra; Jocelyn, who runs a Rhodesian ridgeback breeding business and invited Grigg, a science fiction reader, to join. Each meeting centers on one Austen novel, and the members' romantic lives begin to echo the books they discuss, with marriages tested, attractions forming, and friendships shifting.

The Jane Austen Book Club was released in 2007, directed and written by Robin Swicord and based on Karen Joy Fowler's novel. It was the first film Swicord directed, followed by Wakefield in 2017. The cast includes Kathy Baker, Maria Bello, Emily Blunt, Amy Brenneman, Hugh Dancy and Maggie Grace. Made for about 6 million dollars, it took in roughly 7 million worldwide.

Reception was moderate. On IMDb the film holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 30,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.5 out of 10 from about 400 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 113 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a similar, mildly favorable response from both groups.
