Short description

Tang Ren and Qin Feng, the detective duo from Bangkok's Chinatown, travel to Tokyo to look into the death of a mafia boss. Convinced that the case involves more than an accident or an obvious culprit, they find themselves competing against detectives from other countries, including rivals ranked on an international detective list. The investigation becomes a contest of deduction in unfamiliar surroundings, with the Japanese underworld and its customs forming the backdrop to the puzzle.

The film is the third entry in Chen Sicheng's Detective Chinatown series, following the 2015 original and its 2018 sequel, and Chen again directs from a screenplay he wrote with Yan Yining and Zhang Chun. Baoqiang Wang and Liu Haoran return as the two leads, joined by Satoshi Tsumabuki, Tony Jaa, Masami Nagasawa and Tomokazu Miura, among a credited cast of eighty. With a budget of about 117 million dollars, it is a large-scale production for the Chinese market.

Detective Chinatown 3 was released in February 2021 and took roughly 686 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget that reflects the scale of the series' audience. Reception among viewers was mixed: it holds a rating of 5.6 on IMDb from around 3,100 votes and the same score on TMDB from about 119 votes, while a small sample of critics rated it 6 out of 10. Chen has continued the series and directed other features since.
