Red Dawn
Short description
A small city in Washington state wakes to the sight of foreign paratroopers descending from the sky, and it quickly becomes clear that the town itself is the invaders' first target. The residents are rounded up and held under occupation, but a group of young people manages to escape into the surrounding forest. There they train, organize and begin striking back as a guerrilla unit, naming themselves the Wolverines after their high school's football team. Their local knowledge of the area becomes their main advantage as they try to survive and resist.
This 2012 action thriller is a remake of John Milius's 1984 film of the same name, transplanted to a present-day setting. It was directed by Dan Bradley, a longtime stunt coordinator and second-unit director making his feature debut, from a screenplay by Carl Ellsworth and Jeremy Passmore. Chris Hemsworth leads as Jed Eckert, with Josh Peck as his brother Matt, Josh Hutcherson as Robert Kitner, Isabel Lucas as Erica Martin, Adrianne Palicki as Toni Walsh and Connor Cruise as Daryl Jenkins.
The film runs 93 minutes and was made for about 65 million dollars, with a worldwide gross of roughly 45 million. Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds 5.3 out of 10 from around 84,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from about 1,800 votes. Its ratings are lower than the scale's midpoint on both.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, the role of the invaders in the film was assigned to the Chinese. During post-production, they were replaced with North Koreans in order to gain the possibility of releasing the film in China.
- The news anchor on the television screen is Dan Lewis from KOMO 4 (Seattle news).
- When Robert Kitner (Josh Hutcherson) fires from the machine gun on the roof, the camera shows that he has only 5 rounds left in the belt, but he fires approximately 40 more shots.
- When Jed and the others manage to escape in the truck, they drive off-road. At this point, no smoke is visible coming from the exhaust pipe. When they return to the road, smoke suddenly starts pouring out of the pipe. And in the next shot, it disappears again.
- When Jed, looking through the scope, identifies a Russian special forces soldier, the protective lens cap is still on the scope, and Jed would not have been able to see anything.
- When Captain Cho gets into his car at the beginning of the first chase scene, he slams the door shut with a loud bang. However, it can be noticed that this is a standard soft door with a plastic handle, and it would not make such a noise.
- After Matt yells at Peter to follow them, and they drive through the park, different shots show either Peter's car or a black SUV following the truck.
- Filming was completed in 2009. The release was scheduled for November 24, 2010, but due to MGM's financial difficulties, the film was "shelved". Another reason was Chris Hemsworth's role in "The Avengers" (2012); the studio decided that the box office receipts for "Red Dawn" (2012) would be better due to the fame the actor would gain after "The Avengers".
- Chris Hemsworth and Isabel Lucas both appeared in the series "Home and Away" (1988) and were in a relationship in real life.
- In the original film "Red Dawn" (1984), the invading army consisted of troops from the Soviet Union and Cuba.
- When the characters talk about what they have lost, one of them mentions the game "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare." But the mission where a foreign army invades America, which was directly inspired by the original 1984 film, was in the second installment of the game – "Modern Warfare 2."
- On the bus with the hostages in Spokane, you can notice markings for the "Ballard School District." Ballard is a suburb of Seattle located 275 miles west of Spokane.
