Rose Island

Rose Island tells the story of Giorgio Rosa, an engineer who in 1968 built a platform in the sea off the coast of Rimini, beyond Italian territorial waters, and declared it an independent state. The island attracts journalists and young visitors from many countries, but the Italian government regards the enterprise as a provocation and a way of avoiding taxes, and moves towards a confrontation with Rosa and his companions.

The film is based on real events and follows Rosa's project and the circle of friends and supporters who join him, among them Gabriella, the woman drawn into both his venture and his life. It is directed by Sydney Sibilia, who wrote the screenplay with Francesca Manieri, and it is the fourth of the five features he has directed, arriving between the two I Can Quit Whenever I Want sequels and Mixed by Erry. Elio Germano plays Giorgio Rosa, with Matilda De Angelis as Gabriella and Fabrizio Bentivoglio, François Cluzet, Tom Wlaschiha and Luca Zingaretti among the cast. Produced by Matteo Rovere for Groenlandia on a budget of about 8 million dollars, it runs two hours. Audiences have responded warmly: it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 27,000 votes and the same score on TMDB from over 1,400 votes.
