• The film is based on the novel 'The Descendants' (2007) by Kaui Hart Hemmings.
• The house used for filming the King family had one major drawback – there was no banyan tree near it as described in the book. This problem was solved by transporting and replanting a mature tree that had been dug up with its roots.
• The book's author, Kaui Hart Hemmings, appears in a cameo as the secretary to George Clooney's character.
• Over three hundred girls auditioned for the role of the younger daughter, ten-year-old Scotty.
• Amanda Seyfried auditioned for the role of the older daughter.
• In the book, Scotty wears a t-shirt with the inscription "Mrs. Clooney" at one point. As it turned out, George Clooney plays her father in the film.
• In one scene during a dialogue, as the camera lingers on Clooney, a friend of his daughter is sitting perfectly straight behind him at three meters. When Clooney gets up from the table and the camera pulls back, the same guy is on a chair to his right shoulder.
