I Don't Know How She Does It follows Kate Reddy, a finance professional at a Boston investment firm who is also the mother of two young children. Her days are split between managing accounts worth millions and handling the routines of family life with her husband Richard and their kids. When Kate takes on a client that requires regular trips to New York, and Richard's own career takes a demanding turn, the arrangement that has kept their household running starts to strain. Added to the mix is Jack Abelhammer, a colleague whose attention introduces another source of pressure. The film looks at the compromises and improvisation required of a working mother trying to keep career and family intact.
Douglas McGrath directed the film, the fifth in the sequence of his features, following Emma, Company Man, Nicholas Nickleby and Infamous. Aline Brosh McKenna wrote the screenplay, and Donna Gigliotti produced. Sarah Jessica Parker leads the cast as Kate, with Pierce Brosnan as Jack, Greg Kinnear as Richard, Christina Hendricks as Kate's friend and coworker Allison, Kelsey Grammer as Clark Cooper, and Seth Meyers as Chris Bunce. The production cost about 24 million dollars and took roughly 31 million worldwide, a modest return on its budget.
Audience response has been middling, with a rating of 5 out of 10 on IMDb from about 22,000 votes and 5.2 out of 10 on TMDB from a few hundred votes. A critics' rating of 4 out of 10 from 112 reviews places professional opinion below the audience scores, though both sit in similar territory.
