A Thousand Words
Short description
Jack McCall is a talkative literary agent who relies on his verbal skills to secure business deals. His life changes after a conflict with a New Age guru named Dr. Sinja, which results in a magical Bodhi tree appearing in his yard. Jack discovers that he is linked to the tree, and every word he speaks causes a leaf to fall. Once the final leaf drops, he will die. Forced to limit himself to a total of one thousand words, Jack must find alternative ways to communicate with his wife, son, and colleagues to survive.
Directed by Brian Robbins, this film followed his previous work on Meet Dave. It was produced by Nicolas Cage, Alain Chabat, and Norman Golightly, with a screenplay by Steve Koren. The movie stars Eddie Murphy as Jack McCall, alongside Kerry Washington, Cliff Curtis, Clark Duke, Allison Janney, and Emanuel Ragsdale.
The production had a budget of 40 million USD but earned 22 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception was mixed, with a rating of 5.9/10 on IMDb from 47,000 votes and 6.1/10 on TMDB from 1,448 votes. These scores are notably higher than the rating from film critics, which stands at 3.2/10 based on 57 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was shot in late spring and summer 2008 with a planned release date in the first half of 2009. However, after the breakup in the fall of 2008 between Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks, it was shelved for two and a half years. In early 2011, reshoots were undertaken, after which “A Thousand Words” finally received a premiere date in January 2012. However, after Eddie Murphy stepped down as host of the Oscars, the release was postponed again, first to April and then to March 9, 2012.
