Short description

G.I. Joe: Retaliation follows the elite military unit after it is framed and shut down by presidential order, leaving the surviving members to clear their names. They must face their longstanding enemy Cobra while also dealing with threats emerging from within the government, and the remaining Joes, among them Roadblock and Lady Jaye, seek out Joe Colton, the unit's original founder, as they try to uncover what is really happening.

The film is directed by Jon M. Chu, the fifth of the thirteen features he has directed in chronological order, following Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and preceding Justin Bieber's Believe. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote the screenplay, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner produced. The large cast includes Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock, Bruce Willis as Joe Colton, Jonathan Pryce as the U.S. President, Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye, Ray Park as Snake Eyes and Ray Stevenson as Firefly.

Made for 130 million USD, it took in 372 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.7/10 from around 193,000 votes, while on TMDB it also sits at 5.7/10 from about 5,900 votes. A critics' rating of 4.5/10 from 181 reviews places it below both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the prison scene, a warning sign reads: 'Baustelle! Betreten der Einfahrt verboten!' This translates to 'Construction site! Entry prohibited.' This is absurd because the prison is not a construction site.
  • The stop sign in the prison reads 'Halt' and should be read as 'Stop' (even 'Halt' itself is rarely used on signs in Germany). In German, the word 'halt' has various meanings, for example, 'he is holding something.' But the word has no connection to a stop sign for a car.
  • The password used by retired General Colton to one of his weapons caches is 1776. This is the year the United States Declaration of Independence was adopted.
  • Wrestler Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) is known for his catchphrase, "Do you smell what The Rock is cooking?" His character from this film is a chef in the original comics.
  • The Cobra Commander's helmet has been redesigned from the previous film. It now more closely resembles the Commander from the original 'G.I. Joe' series (1985–1986).
  • Only five actors from "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" (2009) appeared in the sequel. These were Lee Byung-hun, Ray Park, Arnold Vosloo, Jonathan Pryce, and Channing Tatum.
  • Snake Eyes trains with a character nicknamed Jinx, dressed in red clothing, as in the film "G.I. Joe: The Real American Hero" (1987), where this heroine first appears. And later on the mountain, she is already in the black and yellow ninja suit from the "G.I. Joe: Sigma 6" (2005–2006) series.
  • In the scene where the heroes leave the mountain monastery, the same footage of a red ninja falling is used for two different characters.
  • The prison located in former East Germany is called Einsargen. This word is a verb, not a noun. It means 'to place in a coffin'.
  • This film was originally scheduled for release on June 29, 2012. In February, Paramount Pictures launched a large-scale campaign with expensive advertising during the Super Bowl. However, in May 2012, it was announced that the release date was being pushed back to March 29, 2013, to add 3D effects. It later turned out that the real reason for the delay was to reshoot scenes with Channing Tatum. Test audiences wanted more scenes with Tatum and Dwayne Johnson, and after the success of 'The Vow' (2012) and '21 Jump Street' (2012), Tatum unexpectedly became a box office draw.
  • On November 22nd, an accident occurred that claimed the life of a crew member. Mike Haber was working on a lift that overturned, causing the man's death.
  • Dwayne Johnson's character was originally supposed to appear in the first film.
  • The film's original title was G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes.
