The Bucket List
Short description
Two men with terminal cancer share a hospital room and find themselves facing the same grim prognosis. Edward Cole is a wealthy corporate owner, Carter Chambers a working-class mechanic, and the two have little in common beyond their illness. When Carter begins writing a list of things he wants to do before he dies, Edward proposes they actually carry it out, and together they set off on a trip built around that list, financing the journey with Edward's fortune. The experience draws the men closer and forces each to reckon with the lives they have led.
Rob Reiner directed the film, the twelfth of nineteen features he has directed in chronological order, following Rumor Has It... and preceding Flipped. Justin Zackham wrote the screenplay, and Reiner produced with Craig Zadan and Alan Greisman. Jack Nicholson plays Edward and Morgan Freeman plays Carter, with Sean Hayes, Beverly Todd, Alfonso Freeman and Dawn Lewis in supporting roles. The credited cast numbers 23; the credited crew numbers 77.
Released in December 2007, the film runs 97 minutes and cost about 45 million USD, earning roughly 175 million USD worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audience response has been favorable: it holds 7.3/10 on IMDb from around 271,000 votes and 7.2/10 on TMDB from about 4,230 votes. The film critics' rating stands lower, at 5.4/10 from 176 reviews.

- Jack Nicholson's 'hospital' experience served as the basis for writing some of the film's dialogue and scenes. For example, mirrored sunglasses were not mentioned in the script. Nicholson brought them to the set himself, taking them from the hospital where he was undergoing treatment. Rob Reiner liked the idea of adding such a detail to his film.
- Justin Zackham wrote the role of Carter specifically for Morgan Freeman.
- Copies of the film were delivered to some cinemas under the false title 'Roads to Paradise'.
