Kevin Hart: Laugh at My Pain is a stand-up concert film featuring the comedian performing before a live audience, framed by a visit to his hometown of Philadelphia, where his career began. The stage portion was recorded at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, and Hart's material draws on his family, his childhood and his father, with the closing stretch built around a parody of a bank robbery. Na'im Lynn also appears. The film was written by Hart, Na'im Lynn and Joey Wells.
Tim Story directed, placing it fifth among the fifteen films he has directed in chronological order, between Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Think Like a Man; Leslie Small also directed. It was produced by HartBeat Productions, Comedy Central Films, Codeblack Entertainment and Usual Suspects Productions, and ran 89 minutes in theaters.
Released in September 2011, the film took in about 8 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for a stand-up release. Audiences responded well: on IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from roughly 6,700 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from 158 votes. The critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10, based on six reviews, sits below both audience scores, indicating that viewers were considerably warmer toward the film than reviewers were.
