Short description

John Dies at the End follows two friends, John and Dave, who have dropped out of college and struggle to hold down jobs. Their lives change when they encounter a street drug known as Soy Sauce, which offers users an out-of-body experience and sends them drifting through time and other dimensions. Not everyone who takes it comes back human, and a quiet invasion of Earth appears to be under way. John and Dave, neither of them remotely heroic, find themselves caught up in the middle of it.

Don Coscarelli wrote and directed the film, which he also produced with Andy Meyers and Brad Baruh. It came out in 2013, after a run of films that includes the Phantasm series, The Beastmaster, Bubba Ho-tep and Incident On and Off a Mountain Road. Chase Williamson plays Dave and Rob Mayes plays John, with Paul Giamatti as Arnie Blondestone, Clancy Brown as Dr. Albert Marconi, Glynn Turman as Detective Lawrence Appleton and Doug Jones as Roger North. The credited cast runs to forty people, and the production was made for about one million dollars.

On IMDb the film holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 42,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.3, from around 750 votes. A critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 87 reviews places it somewhat below those audience scores. The genre listing combines comedy and horror, and the production involved companies in Malaysia and the United States.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The author of the book “John Dies at the End” David Wong deleted an email from Don Coscarelli offering to adapt his book for the screen, as he thought it was a prank.
