The Battle at Lake Changjin

Set during the Korean War in the winter of 1950, the film follows Chinese soldiers sent into North Korea to confront United Nations forces, chiefly the American military, in the frozen terrain around Changjin Lake, also known as the Chosin Reservoir. The campaign runs from late November to late December, and the Chinese troops endure severe cold, limited supplies and a significant gap in weaponry as they face a better equipped enemy commanded by General MacArthur. At the centre of the story are two brothers, Wu Qianli and Wu Wanli, whose unit is drawn into one of the war's most violent engagements. The film is based on real events.

Chen Kaige, Tsui Hark and Dante Lam directed the film together, with a screenplay by Huang Jianxin and Lan Xiaolong. It stands as the ninth of thirteen films Chen Kaige has directed, following My People, My Country, and the twenty-eighth of thirty-one by Tsui Hark, after Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings. For Dante Lam it came after The Rescue, and a sequel followed in 2022. Wu Jing, Jackson Yee, Duan Yihong, Zhu Yawen and Kevin Lee are among the large credited cast.

Released on 30 September 2021, the 178-minute war drama was made for about 100 million US dollars and earned roughly 914 million US dollars worldwide, a return far beyond its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from about 4,800 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from around 158 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1 out of 10 from eleven reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
