Short description
Run Fatboy Run centres on Dennis, a London security guard who is out of shape and short on ambition. Five years after leaving his pregnant fiancée Libby at the altar, he realises he still loves her and wants another chance. That is complicated by Whit, her new partner: wealthy, confident and physically fit. After a rash boast, Dennis commits to running the London Marathon, and the film follows his training and the obstacles between him and the finish line.
The 2007 comedy was the first feature directed by David Schwimmer, who went on to direct Trust in 2010. Simon Pegg stars as Dennis and co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Ian Black. Thandiwe Newton plays Libby, with Hank Azaria as Whit, Dylan Moran as Gordon, Harish Patel as Mr. Goshdashtidar and India de Beaufort as Maya Goshdashtidar. Robert Jones and Sarah Curtis produced the British-American production, which cost about 10 million dollars and took roughly 33 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 71,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.2 out of 10 from 768 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 153 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores. The 100-minute film mixes comedy and romance around a training regime that becomes as much about self-respect as about winning Libby back.
What's left behind the scenes
- Harish Patel was cast as Mr. Goshdastidar, even though he couldn't ride a scooter at all. Before filming began, the actor took several scooter riding lessons to avoid accidentally running someone over on set.
- The film's soundtrack includes a song by The Fratellis. Another song by the band is also featured on the soundtrack of "Hot Fuzz," starring the same Simon Pegg.
- A poster for the film 'Team America: World Police' can be spotted in the film.
- The original plot of the film took place during a marathon in Los Angeles. When it was decided that the film would be shot by the British, the setting was changed to London. Because the London Marathon was already 'booked' by the crew of another film, the creators of 'Run, Fatboy, Run' used the fictional Nike River Run marathon instead.
- When male nudity is required in scenes, they traditionally cover the penis with a sort of flesh-colored modesty pouch. This pouch kept slipping out of place, so the actor playing Whit, Hank Azaria, decided to go without it altogether, but warned director David Schwimmer not to tell Peggy. That’s why Peggy’s expression of surprise when Azaria was left without a towel was entirely genuine.
