Short description

Jeff Thompkins is a thirty-something man still living in his mother's basement, spending his days waiting for a sign from the universe about what he is supposed to do with his life. When his mother sends him out on an errand, he crosses paths with his brother Pat, whose own life looks very different on the surface: a job, a wife named Linda, and a Porsche he cannot really afford. Pat is convinced Linda is having an affair, and the two brothers end up spending the day trailing her, with consequences neither of them plans for.

The film is a comedy drama written and directed by Jay and Mark Duplass, who had previously made Baghead and Cyrus. Jason Segel plays Jeff, Ed Helms plays Pat, Susan Sarandon plays their mother Sharon, and Judy Greer plays Linda, with Rae Dawn Chong and Steve Zissis also appearing.

Released in March 2012, the film runs eighty-three minutes and was produced by Indian Paintbrush, Duplass Brothers Productions, Mr. Mudd Production and Paramount Vantage. It cost about 10 million dollars and took roughly 4 million dollars worldwide, a poor return. Reception was moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 across 66,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from a much smaller base of 702 votes. A critics' average of 6.8 from 144 reviews puts reviewers slightly above the audience scores on both platforms.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Directors Jay Duplass and Mark Duplass said they were crying throughout the film's premiere screening.
  • Towards the end of the film, Jeff wraps his mother in a blanket to calm her down, and in the very next shot, she is no longer wrapped in the blanket.
  • When Jeff looks at the 'knife', the phone rings. Jeff picks up the cordless phone and a dial tone is heard. However, the 'call' button on the handset was not pressed.
