Wendy and Jon Savage are a sister and brother who have drifted apart over the years, each occupied with unsettled personal and professional lives. When their estranged father's health declines and he can no longer look after himself, they are drawn back together to arrange his care. The responsibility forces them to confront a shared history they had long tried to leave behind.
Tamara Jenkins wrote and directed the film, which was her second feature and her first since 1998. Laura Linney plays Wendy and Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Jon, with Philip Bosco as their father, Lenny. Supporting roles include Peter Friedman, David Zayas and Gbenga Akinnagbe. The film runs 114 minutes and blends comedy with drama.
Made for about 8 million dollars, the film took roughly 11 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a specialty release. On IMDb it holds a 6.9 rating from 451 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 7.5 from 173 reviews, placing critical approval somewhat above the general audience response. Jenkins went on to direct Private Life in 2018.
