Definitely, Maybe centres on Will Hayes, a New Yorker in his thirties whose marriage is ending. When his ten-year-old daughter Maya asks how he met her mother, he tells her about the years before he married, going back to 1992, when he arrived from Wisconsin to work in politics in New York. His account covers three significant relationships: Emily, a college girlfriend; April, a friend and confidante; and Summer, an ambitious journalist. To keep the story suitable for his daughter, Will alters names and details, so Maya has to work out which of the women became her mother. Revisiting that past also prompts Will to reconsider his present.
The film is a comedy-romance directed and written by Adam Brooks, his first feature as director; his second, The Life List, followed years later. It was produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, with a cast led by Ryan Reynolds as Will, Abigail Breslin as Maya, Elizabeth Banks, Isla Fisher and Rachel Weisz as the three women, and Kevin Kline.
Released in February 2008, it took about 55 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from over 171,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.9/10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 6.5/10 from 148 reviews sits between the two audience scores.
