Excision
Short description
Pauline is a teenage outcast with an intense fixation on medicine and surgery, and she hopes to become a doctor. At school she is isolated, her relationship with her parents is strained, and she is preoccupied with losing her virginity. Her younger sister, Grace, has cystic fibrosis and receives most of the family's attention. Pauline's inner life is filled with fantasies about the human body that grow increasingly violent and sexual, blurring her sense of what is real and what is imagined, and her behaviour becomes more erratic and more dangerous to those around her. Believing she can repair her family by helping Grace, Pauline decides to take her sister's treatment into her own hands.
Richard Bates Jr. wrote and directed Excision, his first feature, followed by Suburban Gothic in 2014 and Trash Fire in 2016. The cast includes AnnaLynne McCord as Pauline, Traci Lords and Roger Bart as her parents, Ariel Winter as Grace, Jeremy Sumpter as Adam, and John Waters as William. The film runs 81 minutes and was produced by Dylan Hale Lewis.
Excision holds an IMDb rating of 6.1 from around 27,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 6.2 from 625 votes, indicating a modest but settled level of viewer approval. Its critics' rating of 6.8 from 26 reviews is somewhat higher than the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- AnnaLynn McCord actually cut her hair for the final scene.
- AnnaLynn McCord was very interested in participating in the project, and although director Richard Bates Jr. doubted that she could handle such a complex character, the actress managed to impress him during a personal meeting when, in response to the fact that she would have to shave her head for the final scene, she took a knife and began to cut off her curls.
- Filming took 28 days.
- John Waters agreed to the role of the priest on two conditions – not to fly to the set in economy class and not to shave off his signature mustache.
