Short description
Terminator Genisys is set largely in a reshaped version of the past. John Connor, who leads humanity's resistance against the machines, sends his trusted soldier Kyle Reese back through time to protect his mother, Sarah Connor, and secure the future. What Reese finds is not the history he was raised to expect: Sarah has already been trained and raised by a reprogrammed Terminator known as the Guardian, and the timeline itself has shifted. Together they face a new cybernetic threat, while Skynet's plans on both the past and future fronts put the resistance under pressure.
The film was directed by Alan Taylor, following his 2013 release Thor: The Dark World, and written by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to the series as the Guardian, alongside Jason Clarke as John Connor, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, J.K. Simmons as O'Brien and Dayo Okeniyi as Danny Dyson. It is a large production, with a budget of 155 million USD and a worldwide gross of 441 million USD.
On IMDb the film holds 6.3/10 from around 306,000 votes, and on TMDB 6/10 from over 9,000 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7/10 from 276 reviews places it below both audience scores.

Matheson refused, as she didn't want to feel guilty towards fans of the first installment of the franchise who might notice the different sneaker model. Only after Paramount Studios intervened did Nike agree to manufacture 25 pairs of Vandal sneakers specifically for this film.
- Adrien James was offered a role in this film, but he declined due to scheduling conflicts.
- In the scene where the Terminator studies a new type of ammunition, he says he read about it on gunsandammo.com. While preparing for the filming of the first installment of the franchise, Arnold Schwarzenegger underwent a week-long course on weapons handling and, as a result, received praise from Soldier of Fortune magazine, which noted the realism with which the actor handled weapons in the film.
- Kristanna Loken was considered for the role of the T-X.
- This is the first film in the franchise in which Stan Winston – a special effects master and close friend of Arnold Schwarzenegger who passed away in 2008 – did not participate in the animation of the Terminators. The Legacy Effects team, created by Winston's former apprentices, is responsible for the special effects in the new film.
- It was decided not to hide Arnold Schwarzenegger's age with CGI effects. Instead, the screenwriters decided to explain that the living tissue covering the Terminator can age, and the robot's hair can turn gray. James Cameron suggested this idea to the filmmakers.
- During the chase scene across the Golden Gate Bridge (which takes place in 2017), the movable barrier system was not yet visible on the bridge. These barriers were installed in January 2015, several months after filming was completed.

- The Barrett M82 anti-material rifle used by Sarah Connor was developed in 1982, but was not adopted for service until 1989, significantly reducing the chances of a civilian obtaining such a weapon, especially a modernized M82A1 version.
- During the chase scene on the bridge, the Terminator, played by Arnold, punches through the windshield of a car. All modern car windshields are made of laminated safety glass – multiple layers of glass bonded with a special film capable of containing shards upon impact. This wouldn't happen in a real car; with a strong enough impact, the glass would shatter completely, but wouldn't form a hole.
- After the T800, which arrived in 1984, was disabled during transport in a truck, it is visible that it is missing part of its nose. However, when the T1000 finds Sarah Connor and activates the T800, the T800's nose is back in place.
- At the 28th minute, Sarah Connor fires 13 times in a row at the T-1000 from a Desert Eagle pistol, although the standard magazine for this pistol holds from 7 to 9 rounds, depending on the caliber and modification.
- At the 35th minute of the film, the T-1000 climbs out through the windshield of a police car and jumps onto the rear doors of a van, but the car continues to drive at the same speed, accelerates, and soon crashes into the van.
- When the T-800 pushes John Connor onto a parked SUV at the 71st minute of the film, it can be noticed that actor Jason Clarke is replaced by a stunt double in this scene.
- At the 89th minute of the film, John Connor rips out the driveshaft from under the bus. As the bus rotates in the air and flips several times on the ground, John cannot be seen anywhere outside the bus. In the next scene, the bus hangs from the bridge, and John reappears in the rear area.
- Emilia Clarke became the second actress from the series "Game of Thrones" (2011) to play Sarah Connor. Several years ago, the mother of the savior of humanity was played by Lena Headey in the series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" (2008–2009).
- Jai Courtney could have dropped out of the film's cast as the filming schedule coincided with the production of the sequel to "Divergent" (2014). However, the contract was structured in a way that allowed him to appear in both films.

- Megan Ellison acquired the rights to the franchise in June 2011 for $20 million, outbidding Lionsgate, which had offered $15 million. In 2014, deciding to focus on producing arthouse-style films on her Annapurna label, she transferred the rights to her brother, David Ellison. Victor Kubichek and Derek Anderson, who previously held the rights, were forced to relinquish them due to debts at their company Halycon, which led to an FBI investigation that revealed fraud involving a hedge fund during the financing of "Terminator Salvation" (2009).
- Screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis revealed that one source of inspiration while writing the screenplay was "Back to the Future Part II" (1989). Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier themselves turned down offers to write the screenplay for this film three times, as they disliked the plots of the third and fourth installments of the franchise, and only agreed after a personal conversation with James Cameron.
