Set in South Korea during the 1980s and 1990s, Nameless Gangster follows Choi Ik-hyun, a customs official who has been supplementing his income through bribes from smugglers. When an inspection turns up a large haul of heroin and his superiors begin to close in on his illegal dealings, Ik-hyun looks for a way to keep the profits and avoid the consequences. He approaches Choi Hyung-bae, a powerful figure in Busan's underworld, and the two discover they are distant relatives. What starts as a business arrangement between them grows into a partnership built on mutual criminal interests, until shifting circumstances and the authorities' growing pressure on organized crime push the two men toward a falling out.
The film is the second feature directed by Yoon Jong-bin, who also wrote the screenplay, following his debut and preceding Kundo: Age of the Rampant and The Spy Gone North. Choi Min-sik leads as Ik-hyun, with Ha Jung-woo as Hyung-bae; Kwak Do-won, Ma Dong-seok, Kim Sung-kyun and Kim Hye-eun appear in supporting roles among a credited cast of 54. Produced by Showbox and Palette Pictures, the crime thriller runs 133 minutes.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from more than 7,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 out of 10 from 193 votes, indicating a generally favorable but not unanimous audience response. A critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from five reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
