Short description

Lord of Illusions follows Harry D'Amour, a New York private investigator who has dealt with supernatural cases before. His latest job takes him to Los Angeles, where he becomes entangled with a cult awaiting the return of its leader, Nix, a powerful magician killed thirteen years earlier. The trail leads him to Philip Swann, a celebrated stage illusionist, and Swann's wife Dorothea, who ask for his protection. When cult members succeed in bringing Nix back, the threat becomes far more than a routine investigation.

Clive Barker wrote the screenplay and produced the film, and it was the third feature he directed, following Hellraiser in 1987 and Nightbreed in 1990. Scott Bakula plays D'Amour, with Kevin J. O'Connor as Swann, Famke Janssen as Dorothea, Daniel von Bargen as Nix and Joel Swetow as Valentin, among a credited cast of thirty-four. United Artists, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Seraphim Films produced the film, which runs 109 minutes and mixes drama, fantasy and horror.

Released in August 1995, the film took in about 13 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 from roughly 21,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 from around 392 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1 from 28 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores. The vote counts point to a modest but persistent following rather than a broad mainstream one.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When casting for the film began, director and screenwriter Clive Barker chose a photo of Famke Janssen from hundreds of submissions and said, "There's Dorothea." Several dozen actresses were screened for the role, but Barker stood his ground.
