Sarah travels with her father John and her uncle Peter to the family's isolated summer house, which has sat empty and was broken into during the off-season. The plan is to clean it up and prepare it for sale. Working in the dark without electricity, Sarah, who has not been there since childhood, starts hearing noises from inside the boarded-up rooms. When Peter leaves for town, the disturbances grow worse, and the house itself seems to close in around her.
The film is a horror mystery directed by Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, whose screenplay adapts an earlier Uruguayan film, drawing on writing by Gustavo Hernández and Oscar Estévez. It followed Kentis's Open Water and Grind, and Lau also produced alongside Agnès Mentre. Elizabeth Olsen plays Sarah, with Adam Trese as her father, Eric Sheffer Stevens as her uncle, Julia Chan as Sophia and Haley Murphy as a child figure.
Made for about two million dollars, the film took roughly thirteen million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Critics rated it 5.2 out of 10 across 135 reviews, while on TMDB it holds 5.4 from 462 votes, so the two groups broadly agree. The story unfolds largely in real time and in near darkness inside one location.
