Short description
A kind but overweight genetics professor, Sherman Klump, is close to perfecting a formula that could reshape how the body handles fat. When Carla Purty arrives as a new faculty member, his hopes of winning her over push him to test the untried serum on himself. The result is a second self: Buddy Love, a slim, loud and cocky charmer who shares Sherman's body but none of his decency. The two sides of the same man end up competing for the life Sherman wants to lead, and the switches between them are difficult to control.
Tom Shadyac directed the film, the second of the nine features listed for him, following Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and preceding Liar Liar. Eddie Murphy plays Sherman and Buddy as well as several other members of the Klump family. Jada Pinkett Smith appears as Carla, with James Coburn, Larry Miller, Dave Chappelle and John Ales among the supporting cast. Brian Grazer and Russell Simmons produced the Universal release, made with a reported budget of 54 million dollars and taking about 129 million dollars worldwide.
Audience scores are modest and closely matched: on IMDb the film holds 5.7 out of 10 from roughly 131,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.6 from a much smaller base of just over 3,200. A critics' rating of 5.7 from 54 reviews places professional opinion at the same level as the general audience response.

- The film is based on the 1963 science fiction comedy of the same name, whose director, Jerry Lewis, serves as an executive producer here.
- In one episode, Professor Klump opens his desk after class and secretly, with a feeling of deep longing, takes out a Snickers chocolate bar. However, when the film was released in the United Kingdom, the chocolate was digitally altered to the Chocky brand.
- Filming took place in Los Angeles and its suburbs, as well as in the California towns of San Marino and Pasadena.
- Dean Richmond was named after Bill Richmond – co-author of the screenplay for the original 1963 film. And the offensive bar comedian Reggie Warrington – after Reginald and Warrington Hudlin, who worked with Eddie Murphy on “Boomerang” (1992).
- In this film, Eddie Murphy played seven roles at once (portraying all characters of both genders – except for the younger brother played by Jamal Mixon – from the “Nutty Professor” family) through physical transformation and the masterful makeup work of Rick Baker, for which he received another well-deserved “Oscar.” Thus, Eddie Murphy plays the following characters: Sherman Klump – a college professor, Cletus Klump – his father, Anna Pearl Jensen Klump – his mother, Ida May Jensen – his grandmother, Ernie Klump – his older brother, Buddy Love – Sherman Klump’s “double,” and Lance Perkins.
