James Sveck is an intelligent and sensitive teenager in New York who struggles to fit into society. During the final summer before he is expected to start college, he feels alienated from his divorced parents and his older sister. While he finds support in his unconventional grandmother, his inability to adapt leads his parents to enroll him in therapy. Through sessions with a therapist, James reflects on his past and his reluctance to follow the traditional path adults expect of him, seeking wisdom and self-understanding through alternative means.
