Short description
An elite police squad in Jakarta carries out a pre-dawn raid on an apartment block that serves as a safe house for dangerous criminals. The building is run by the drug lord Tama, and its residents are hardened killers. During the operation, the squad is spotted, and word quickly reaches Tama, who blocks the exits, cuts the power, and sends his men after the intruders. Trapped inside, the officers have to fight their way through the floors in order to get out and survive.
Gareth Evans wrote and directed the film, his second feature after Merantau (2009), followed by V/H/S/2 (2013), The Raid 2 (2014), Apostle (2018) and Havoc (2025). Iko Uwais plays Rama, heading a cast that includes Joe Taslim as Jaka, Donny Alamsyah as Andi, Yayan Ruhian as Mad Dog, Pierre Gruno as Wahyu and Ray Sahetapy as Tama. Ario Sagantoro produced the film, which was made for about 1 million USD and went on to earn around 9 million USD worldwide.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 7.6 from roughly 229,000 votes, and it scores 7.4 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes. A film critics' rating of 7.6 from 170 reviews places it in line with the audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- To prepare the actors for filming, they were sent for a week to a Marine training base called "KoPaSKa" (Komando Pasukan Katak).
- All the weapons used in the film are airsoft replicas of real firearms. Spent casings and muzzle flashes during shooting were added using computer graphics.
- The original title of the film translates to "Fatal Raid".
- Mike Shinoda's music was not originally featured in the film. A new soundtrack was commissioned from Shinoda only after Sony Pictures acquired "The Raid" for North American distribution.
- In the film, Andy says, "What I do, I do very well. But what I do isn't very good"—this is a line from Wolverine. It was first spoken by Wolverine in the self-titled comic book in 1982 by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller.
